My Nokia 5230

Last time I used Nokia phone was in 2007, and after that, I was quite happy with the brands I was using. However, once again I decided to join the Nokia following bargain so I am back on Nokia now. For last one month and a half, I am using Nokia 5230. A nice phone and good to have it but I am not much satisfied. Well contradiction is there in my last statement but yes, I have to accept it is a nice phone but I am not satisfied because it is missing some certain features for which I bought it.

It is easy to use, and the touch panel works well hence it is bit slow. It has a wide screen so it’s fun to watch videos on it, its music player and radio are also cool but there is a certain feature which is annoying as any SMS dropped in while music, video of radio is on the ring tone spoiled the fun. It is something I am not much familiar with as in my last phone there was only vibration no sound in such case.

Nokia do not allow transferring Music from PC to Phone via blue tooth using pc suite. I got 2 GB memory card with it so far it is enough for me however; it can be extended up to 8 GB card. Writing SMS is not as cool as it used to be on other key oriented phone this might be the reason because I am not used to touch phones.

One thing I must mention here is its voice during the call is quite low, and sometimes it is hard to understand what other person is saying. It can be connected to any speaker using the stereo pin and one can enjoy music with louder voice.

Using internet is an interesting feature on it as being touch oriented phone its really cool to scroll and click on the desired links or pictures. The writing panel that appears while you are writing something e.g. SMS, Email, Text, Web Links, etc is quite user friendly and it changes itself to full key board from conventional keys of phone just by flipping it to the horizontal view. I have noticed that it turns into the landscape mode easily but it take time to sense when it is supposed to resume to the tower view.

The Facebook application work well but the twitter application I got from OVI Store is damn slow. YouTube, Amazone.com, MySpace, and Hi5 are the other pre-installed applications in it. It is connected to net via GPRS and to me the biggest drawback in it is that it do not have Wi-Fi in it.

There are two features it is lacking in which disappointed me right after I used it first time:

1. It does not have any word processing application, I desperately wanted to have such app in my phone so that I can write the draughts of my blogs and articles on the go, and I am still not able to get one from OVI store.
2. It has two Mega Pixel camera and more on it there is no flash light so the photos it click are not that good in quality if there is not sufficient light, however the its competitor (as per me) Samsung  Genoa and Samsung Star are offering flash light along with more than 2 MP camera.

OVI store is a good idea but so far, I have not found anything of my interest on it for my phone so to me it has not been useful yet. Nokia 5230 also offers Maps and it is one of the pre-installed features but like OVI store, it has also not been useful for me so far.

Well that is enough for right now I guess and I will review some other phone soon as I am thinking to change it. Well if you are big Nokia fan than you must try it else choose some other one which have better features in less or in same price, well for me spending almost 14 k Pakistani Rupees has not been good experience because of camera and word processing applications, rest it is a cool phone and I am enjoying it so far.

FaceXs

Every optical scanner is a camera, this is the fact which I never realized before visiting Solo Smart tech inc. this past Friday I was lucky enough to see one of the greatest achievement and innovation by Pakistan. I am talking about FaceXs (Facial Recognition Device) a device which can handle almost every issue regarding access control.

Security is a big issue today even at schools kids have to go through scanning this the best example I could give, but security is one new thing as a few years back security was not as big issue as it is now however there is one thing which is there for a long time and that is ghost attendance at workplaces specially when it is a government institution. Many things came into the scene, RFID system, biometric scanners and many other things.

The card scanning system Also known as RFID system is something which is very famous snapping card to get access to the controlled areas just like what we have seen in old 007 movies. Are we still sure that there is no ghost attendance in practice when RFID is doing its job. Sure one can show more than one cards to mark the attendance, and there are some issues too card got stolen, one forget to carry it, and it got scratched even.

To me RFID is not a cost effective idea, generating so many cards and keep issuing them after the occurrence of any of the above issues. Every year companies have to spend big bucks every time they issue new cards. The one thing I like about FaceXs is it is one time investment and no need to issue new cards and the best thing “one can forget to carry his card but no one fill forget to bring his face with him”.

Now come to the technology of finger prints and thumb impressions, not a bad Idea but still one have to touch the machine. Imagine that the finger is soaked with cream, ghee, sweat, or any other thing and the scanning panel. I do not think that I have to say any other thing as if you have good imagination you can get idea what the scanning surface has to go through.

Just show your face to the optical scanner and you are in; no need to carry card and cleaning the surface after the finger touched it. Start counting the advantages, FaceXs can be integrated with any electrical door, the price is only 125000 Rupees which is far more economical than any other product produced here in Pakistan or Imported one, extremely easy to use, it only required 12 volts of power so it can easily work on UPS, it will scan your face no matter if it is wet with sweat or water, FaceXs have no issue in scanning your face even if you have applied some cream or anything like that on your face, it is completely fine if you have started to keep mustaches, or you haven’t shaven for many days, it is portable and do not occupy huge space, it makes the 3d image of the face so it will only scan your face ( I tested it on Picture)

While talking to man behind the product, Mr. Farhan Masood, Director Solo Smart tech I got to know some interesting facts. He said that they tested FaceXs on identical twins and out of ten pairs it identified eight of them correct and for remaining two they have issued cards, FaceXs also have RFID panel to coup with such situations and it can help in managing the records of visitors and allowing them to enter only after snapping the cards where as regular employees have to “face” it. It has internal record keeping/ backup system so if it is disconnected from the main network it stores data in the internal memory and we can get that data from the USB port which is under the device. Mr. Farhan also said that they offer installation as well as one day training and solo smart is available for the backup support whenever it is required.

Mr. Farhan says that it is a device which cannot be fooled; it is a revolution in the technology field of Pakistan. To me it is one of the greatest innovations ever took place in Pakistan and it’s a must to have device at a workplace where at least 25 people visit every day. The features and advantages it offers are far more than the cost one have to pay, and let’s face it FaceXs is one time cost that will serve you for long time and give you surety that the workplace is safe from ghost attendance, there is something called access controlled and one more thing you can avoid unwanted guests.

Facebook VS Twitter

With all the excitement about Facebook & Twitter, I thought why not share my personal review between the two.

To be frank I never check Facebook daily, but Twitter yes, If I don’t check Twitter I feel like am missing alot. So daily after logging into internet, after Gmail I open twitter.com as my second website of the day.

Twitter.com is kept open till am on PC with the plugin Reload Every *if am using Firefox, if Chrome then I have to refresh it myself can Chrome developers get plug-ins feature as soon as possible please?*, yes I don’t use any of the twitter application *Destroy Twitter, TweetDeck* nothing, I like to view it from web ;p

Why I like Twitter alot is the question now, well Twitter is like getting updated, getting touched within few seconds, most of the tweeple *people who use twitter* out there would be using twitter through applications, cell phones, would quickly get the update and respond.

Facebook is like, you update and now waiting for friends to respond and for me Facebook is fish market, lots of features, lots of applications *okay I do like and play FarmVille, but other applications? I don’t even check*, for FarmVille I do login to Facebook, other than that I don’t like Facebook.

So for me Twitter wins the race, what about you?

Well, am not found playing games easily, because I don’t play them :/, its not that am a boring person or I don’t get time, I do get time, but I don’t like games easily, I don’t fall for them so easily.

I remember I loved to play Construction, Theme Parks, Theme Hospital *LOVED IT*, Golden Axe, Paper Boy, Dave, Wolf, etc. They were the games one would love to play again and again.

As many of us know of many applications on Facebook, every other day there is a new application and people getting addicted, you start getting notifications, I got Farmville invitation too, but I didn’t joined it.

During a phone chat with my friend who plays Farmville, begged me *right, she begged me lol* to become her neighbor in Farmville, the next day I became her neighbor I started getting interested in Farmville and now am totally addicted to it.

Farmville has been made by Zynga, and on the same network *Facebook* you will find FarmTown by some other company but they launched it earlier and its bit lacking in graphics, people are getting used to Farmville, they loved FarmTown too, but Farmville looks its elder brother ;d yeah!

Farmville gives you a chance to become farmer, a virtual farmer. You have to plow land, then plant seeds, waits for them to become ready, then you harvest them…, you can plant trees, buy animals, get items for decoration, in short you simply start farming.

Once your planted seed is grown up into plant, you will harvest it and then again plow land to plant new seeds, it’s like on going process. With each plowing, planting seeds, planting trees, buying animals, decorating, we earn xp that helps us to get us to go at another level and unlocking items in Market.

You can sell your trees, animals and decorations, you can send and receive gift with your friends on Facebook, you can send them animal & trees, you can even sell the gift you have got *now that’s rude thing to do with gift, right?* but for coins you can do that :p

With visiting your friend’s farm and accepting to do the proposed task, you can earn coins and xp points.

Some of the features:

• Music (you can disable it too if you don’t like it)

• Zoom In, Zoom Out (I personally like to view my farm in zoom out, that way I can see the complete farm. (And if you need to move, you can click anywhere on the map for walking or if you need to move the map, just click longer and move your mouse))

• Credit Card: And as every facebook game, you have a part where you can buy coins or favor points for getting bonuses, though that you have free offers like surveys. But in Farmville, it’s only for coins, so, if you want to do an useless use of your credit card, go ahead.
