A sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. Activities such as card gamesand board games, are classified as “mind sports” and some are recognized as Olympic sports, requiring primarily mental skills and mental physical involvement. Non-competitive activities, for example as jogging or playing catch are usually classified as forms of recreation.

Physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. However, the degree of skill and performance in some sports such asdiving, dressage and figure skating is judged according to well-defined criteria. This is in contrast with other judged activities such as beauty pageants and body building, where skill does not have to be shown and the criteria are not as well defined.

Records are kept and updated for most sports at the highest levels, while failures and accomplishments are widely announced in sport news. Sports are most often played just for fun or for the simple fact that people need exercise to stay in good physical condition. However, professional sport is a major source of entertainment.

While practices may vary, sports participants are expected to display good sportsmanship, and observe standards of conduct such as being respectful of opponents and officials, and congratulating the winner when losing. [Source]

Indian Cricket Team

The Indian cricket team is the national cricket team of India. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Testand One Day International (ODI) status.

The Indian cricket team is currently ranked first by the ICC in Tests and second in ODIs. As of October 2010, the Indian team has played 445 Test matches, winning 108, losing 138 and drawing 198 of its games, with 1 match ending in a tie. India has a relatively better record in One Day Internationals, winning 52% of matches played. Currently, Gary Kirsten is the head coach while Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain in all forms of the game. Under the leadership of Dhoni, the Indian team has set a national record for most back-to-back ODI wins (9 straight wins) and has emerged as one of the most formidable teams in international cricket.

Although cricket was introduced to India by European merchant sailors in the 18th-century and the first cricket club in India was established in Calcutta in 1792, India’s national cricket team did not play their first Test match until 25 June 1932 at Lord’s. They became the sixth team to be granted Test cricket status. In their first fifty years of international cricket, India proved weaker than Australia and England, winning only 35 of the 196 test matches. The team, however, gained strength near the end of the 1970s with the emergence of players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and the Indian spin quartet—Erapalli Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan (both off spinners), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (a leg spinner), and Bishen Singh Bedi (a left-arm spinner). Traditionally much stronger at home than abroad, the Indian team has improved its overseas form since the start of the 21st century. It won the Cricket World Cup in1983 and was runners-up in 2003 under Sourav Ganguly. India have also been the Runners in2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy, and the Joint Champions along with Sri Lanka in 2002 ICC Champions Trophy led by Sourav Ganguly in both the instances. India also won the inauguralWorld Twenty20 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2007. Well the crux of all the scenario was; there is no electricity (these were good old days when we were not forced to enjoy loadshedding), no proper arrangement to stay there and there is no chance that one can have his celluler network working over there. They also told us that there is another glacier, and as per them we can cross this one but the next was a BIG THING.

At that time we all made a wise decision to go back to BEHRAIN and explore that place. In our way back to BEHRAIN we spent some time at 2 or 3 places in order to fix the jeep. There was one guy name SHERI with us, while at one place the jeep was being fixed and we all were busy in clicking photos and all that, he put binoculars on his eyes and started to look around. Suddenly a PATHAN appeared and he accused that this boy with telescope was staring his wife. That was a scene in the making but we all made that young “Pathan” man understand, he went on his way and we were back to BEHRAIN now.

After having lunch I and Bilal roam about in the bazaar and we bought a comb and a set of playing cards. Bilal then went to search Ball n Bat and I decided to get shaven. Well got back to the room offered ASAR prayer and asked Azeem about Bilal. He was also unaware about Bilal, so we decided to look for him. After some time we spent in search of MODEL of our group Mr. Bilal, we came to know that he was playing cricket with the “local cricketers of the place”

As soon cricket was over we decided to check out the mountains around. On our way we met an old man, his name was Umer and he has been in the tourism department. He was there to help us in exploring the interior Behrain.

This exploring mission began with an ancient Bazaar of Ghee. As per Baba Umer this Bazaar was here since the era of Mughals. The doors of the shops were looking quite strong. And than Baba Umer started to point out at different direction and letting us know that which is the city behind this mountain and which behind that one. According to our “guide”; a young man can reach the valley of KAGHAN after a 6 hour walk. Well I think this young man of Baba’s description can not be the one of this generation.

Yeah I know we are late in updating you guys about it.. though we can read and hear the news everywhere now.. lets see what we have found?

Malik, 28, was at the centre of marriage controversy five years ago when he was reportedly broke an engagement with Ayesha Siddiqui, who was from Mirza’s hometown in India.

The two had reportedly developed friendship on the internet and Siddiqui’s father had even threatened to take Malik to court.

Malik has denied any serious relationship with Siddique.

The 23-year-old Mirza ended a previous engagement to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza in January, citing incompatibility.

She issued a statement Tuesday confirming the marriage plan, but asking for privacy.

“My wedding Inshallah is going to be the biggest day of my life,” she said. “I have been in the media glare for too long and would appreciate a little privacy at this very personal moment in my life.”

On one hand Shoaib Malik denied from any relation with Ayesha and on other hand Sania broke her engagement with her childhood friend Sohrab.

I hope they don’t end this relation soon too? Do they take relation as a sport too? *tu nahi aur sahi, aur nahi koi aur sahi?*

According to Sania’s family, Sania and Shoaib will live in Dubai after marriage, while Geo News has reported that Shoaib Malik and his family has applied for Indian Visa while Sania Mirza and her family has applied for Pakistani Visa.

Activists of a regional political party in Coimbatore on Wednesday held a protest against the much-speculated marriage of Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

The marriage was announced on Tuesday and will take place in April.

The protestors condemned Mirza’s decision to marry a Pakistani cricketer and raised slogans against her, the Central Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government.

They demanded the tennis player be deported from the country. They also demanded the federal government to take back all the awards given to her.

“There have been reports that Sania Mirza will marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, which the Hindu Makkal Katchi, regional Hindu political outfit strongly condemns,” said Senthil Kumar, an activist of Hindu Makkal Katchi.

“Because we feel that the cricket player basically belongs to a country, which aids and abets terrorism against India. It is still to handover the Mumbai attack accused to India. Moreover, this is an insult to 100 crore Indian people and Muslims living in India,” he added.

“We also demand that the highest awards such as Padma Shri should be taken back from her immediately and we want to deport her from India.”

Pakistan’s Naseem Hamid created history on Monday by becoming the fastest woman of the region when she won the 100-metre sprint gold medal at the South Asian Games.

The 22-year-old from Rawalpindi clocked 11.81seconds, 0.12seconds ahead of Sri Lanka’s Pramila Priyadarshani, to bag her first gold medal before a strong crowd at Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Wearing national green tights, she led the field among the eight runners after her easy qualification for the finals.

“I had forgotten the world for six months and trained really very, very hard under my coach Maqsood Ahmed to achieve this,” Naseem Hamid said.

“It is a great moment for me to have brought glory to the country in my event after the poor showing by our national cricket team and especially since our athletics standards have been poor of late,” she added.

“I hope my performance will inspire the young athletes to become professionals.”

Both 100-metre results turned out to be upsets as Shehan Saearuwan of Sri Lanka toppled India’s Abdul Najeeb Qureshi who had previously won the 200-metre event.

Meanwhile, for Naseem Hamid to win the 100-metre sprint was a historic moment as no Pakistani woman had achieved this feat in 26-year history of the regional games.

Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Chief Lt.Gen (Rtd) Syed Arif Hasan congratulated Naseem for her historic performance and announced a one-lakh-rupee (Rs.100,000) cash prize for her remarkable achievement.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Liaquat Ali took the bronze medal in the 100-metre dash by clocking 10.63 seconds, finishing behind Sri Lankan and Indian athletes.

Pakistan, favourites for 4×100-metre relay, finished third behind India and Sri Lanka. The Pakistani quartet comprising Ali Aamir Murad, Tahir Shafique, Ali Muhammad and Asad clocked three minutes 16.73 seconds to bag the bronze medal.

Earlier, Zafar Iqbal put in a high-class performance in the triple-jump event with a superb effort of 16.5 metres to beat Indian rival by nearly three quarters of a metre to pick up his second athletics gold after Basharat Ali snapped the discus gold on Saturday.

Mohsin Ali won the 110-metre hurdles by clocking the distance in 14.56 seconds, beating Sandeep Parmer (14.76seconds) and Muthuswamy (14.88seconds), both of India.

In the javelin throw event, Muhammad Imran won the silver medal with a 73.38-metre long throw as Kashinnath Naik of India won the gold medal and his compatriot Samarjeet Singh took bronze.

Pakistan quartet of Naseem, Javaria Hassan, Nazia Nazir and Sadaf Siddiqui won the women’s 4×100 relay race by covering the distance in 47.16 seconds. India took the gold and Bangladesh silver medal.

Pakistan has so far won four gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the track and field events. —APP

There are some books upfront which you wouldn’t dare say I did not read it. If you get hold of it, read it. Coming from a cricketing legend this book covers all his life, and thrills a cricket lover with an encounter with a sportsman as good as him.

Being an autobiography, it is interesting to the ways in which he entered cricket professionally and speaks greatness these clubs encourage talents as was the case with him. On a day when he was over with school and wanted to convert his leanings towards his talent – sports intoprofession, he quit school and played cricket fulltime.

From the book you know how he rose to be one of the best all-rounders,performing well equally with the bat and the ball. He had his own share of bad times being targeted by media and people alike. How he had good friends in Vivian Richards and Garner. And how he supported them when they were dropped from club team. How his performance lifted the club he played for – Somerset. He was a beer guzzler and was called beefy for his body and build and how without proper beer in India which was not available in their times, he suffered. How like true sportsman hewas so fit that he played other games apart from cricket. And if it had been not for cricket, he could have chosen football. How intermittently during his highs he went for some drugs for which he had to make public apology to his wife Kathy. His Knighthood and his present life ascommentator with sky.

You can also know and feel a player’s life – his past and present, the dressing room, the scores and how he kept an eye to do better.

David Shepherd

Shepherd, widely regarded as one of the best umpires of his generation, stood in 92 Tests and 172 one-day internationals, including three World Cup finals, between 1983-2005.

He was perhaps best known to cricket fans around the world for his superstitious habit of standing on one leg when the score reached ‘Nelson’, England’s supposedly ‘unlucky’ number of 111 or multiples such as 222.

‘I feel very saddened this has happened,’ Dickie Bird, who umpired many matches alongside his fellow Englishman, told Sky Sports.

‘He was a fine umpire, we spent many happy hours together. He was a great man and a tremendous man to umpire with. He was a good bloke, he’ll be sadly missed and he was a great friend.’ -AFP (- via dawn -)

Hi there,

I know you guys, girls and mac’s/pc’s will be thinking that I am here to bash Pakistan for it’s poor performance against New Zealand in Semi Final of ICC Champions Trophy 2009. I would think like that too.. but the truth is I don’t feel like bashing them because they lost a series, & no it’s not because of the win against India. So why don’t I feel like making fun of Afridi or Younis?

Why?

Sure, We played some poor strokes, some really badly executed shots, some shots that were only played because of a real fine delivery that made our batsmen jump like he just saw a truck full of ice-cream with his name on it & sure Afridi is as mature as my 11 year old nephew, I wasn’t disappointed too much because I wasn’t expecting a lot from him. If you expected him to carry Pakistan towards the win, please stop — he is a great player but he is not reliable. Sometimes he is dangerous – Sometimes he is a liability. He is like that and that’s why we love him. Younis Khan on other hand might be a good captain but as batsmen he has failed to do any real damage to the opposing team lately.

One problem that I think I must mention here is that umpiring was really disappointing. The incorrect and untimely dismissal of Umar Akmal was the turning point for us.

BUT there were some real fine strokes as well, some that I dare say I never thought a player on 11^th number could execute so perfectly & who knew Muhammad Amir could be a sensible hitter in the tail-enders, someone that we lacked and needed from a long long time. Waseem & Waqar are I guess the last known tail-ender hitters of Pakistan but there hitting was not as sensible as Muhammad Amir’s last night performance. He was hitting all over the ground. It could be beginners luck but let’s give this guy some credit he was playing in immense pressure but kept himself calm and composed & he played really well.

There is plenty to learn from this for our younger and newer cricketers & even more for our senior citizens I mean players.

As far as our bowling is concerned I don’t think they bowled really BAD. I mean seriously we gave away 18 extra runs. The first 3-4 dismissals were very timely and very important. Our downfall was when we failed to get more wickets & by dropping the catch of Vettori, Younis Khan just re-affirmed the statement that catches win matches. Our fielding was not world-class but at least our players were not  thinking about the laundry bill before making dives for blocking 2 or 3 runs.

We must obviously work on reducing the extra’s we give away, need to be more attentive to avoid the fumbles like Vettori’s catch drop.

What we shouldn’t change and try to improve is the kind of team spirit we saw in T20 and Champions Trophy. Our players were playing together for the team. There were no scandals, no apparent fights or clashes. It was cricket as it should be.

I think Pakistani’s played good, not great not awesome. But they played good & I support my team. I was happy when they won the T20 & I stood with them. I am happy that they played well in champion’s trophy, got to the semi final round & I cheered for them & I stand by them.
