Cute FTP

Here is a wonderful program. Very well laid out and designed. One of the best FTP programs on the market today.

I was a novice on FTP when I started off and this program was very helpful. It has a very simple drag and drop feature to allow you to drag files to upload or drag file to your computer to download. This supports resume if your logged onto a server that supports resuming broken downloads.

You can download a trial version of Cute FTP and it is well worth the download if you FTP at all. If you like it then you can send in $39.95 and purchase a full registered version. All in all i would reccomend Cute Ftp to anyone.

CuteFTP is a one of a number of programs that allows one to load content onto a personal website. It also doubles as a downloader program to download certain files from other people’s web space.

There are numerous free FTP programs at www.zdnet.com (in the download section) for those who are more technical adapted. Also there is a free 1 month trial version of Cute for you to try on zdnet.com… After you become some what more at ease with FTP programs, maybe you can use one of the free ones instead of shelling out big bucks for this one.

TextPad

TextPad is a text editor for Windows operating systems. With it, you can edit text files (.txt), or other files containing text, such as html files and Java (and other programming language) source files. It is available in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian) and Spanish versions.

I originally have the TextPad evaluation version (just about the same as full but with nag screens telling you to pay up) installed with my computer from here. I liked using it for various reasons, such as:

• Word wrap – Instead of having to go to the Edit menu (in Notepad) to make the text of a long line wrap to the next, the word wrap option is on the tool bar, so it only takes one click (or a keyboard combination press) to turn it on or off. I find that it always reverts to off when I start TextPad again, which is annoying, but it is faster to than what I used to have to do with Notepad.
• Save as UNIX text – You have option of saving your files in the text format for the UNIX operating system. After editing script files, the files have to be saved in UNIX text format else they don’t run properly and web site doesn’t function properly.
• Code coloring – If you are editing something like a Java source file, TextPad colors in different parts of the syntax with different colors. This helps you to see the “pattern” of the code when scrolling through it and looks better than notepad (the text editor provided by Microsoft with Windows).
• Line numbers – You can have line numbers displayed (they are shaded light grey and to the left of the page. This helps with debugging code. The debugger might say “error on line 13″ or something like that, and if I was still using notepad, I would have to count the number of lines manually to get to the right one. Now I just scroll down till I see the right line number. A great time saver.
• View in web browser button – If you are editing a web page and want to see what it looks like in a web page, there is a button on the toolbar (it looks like the globe). Click it and your web browser will open with your page displayed. This is also a great timesaver – no more hunting for the file in Explorer to preview it.

So inshort I like TextPad, if you can’t pay for the version (like me) then we can bear the nag screen, no? Everything can’t be free

TextPad has many other great time saving features, such as advanced text finding (look in several files at a time), a clip library (which lets you insert HTML tags, HTML characters and other non-standard characters to your document quickly, and auto-indentation (so that you don’t have to worry about making your code “look pretty” – it does it for you).

VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player – the perfect media player for a computer dummy like me who doesn’t know what a codec is or doesn’t know how to play certain media files.

VLC Media Player is an all in one player which can play almost any kind of media files – video and audio too. So we don’t require many media players installed in the computer to play each certain file.

It can play MPEG (ES,PS,TS,PVA,MP3), AVI, ASF / WMV / WMA, MP4 / MOV / 3GP, OGG / OGM / Annodex, Matroska (MKV), Real, WAV (including DTS), Raw Audio: DTS, AAC, AC3/A52, Raw DV, FLAC, FLV (Flash), MXF, Nut, Standard MIDI / SMF, Creative™ Voice.

It doesn’t look stunning or doesn’t have a good GUI but its worth a try.

Positives:
1. Can play almost any media format.
2. Simple to use.
3. General features exist like subtitles, sound system etc.
4. Added features like watching video as the wallpaper etc.
5. Free to use.

Negatives:
1. Not so superior video quality.
2. Extended features don’t exist.
3. Not so beautiful look.

But when you can play almost every media format then who care about its look? I don’t
